We’ve been giving you a lot of chances to win $1,000 on the radio lately. If you haven’t heard by now (where ya been?), you’ve got 5 chances every weekday to win a thousand dollars by listening for the keyword and using it to enter the contest.
Spoiler Alert: tune in at 8am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 5pm for your shot.
With all of this cold air invading Northeast Florida this week, and the chance that it brings snow or ice with it, I’ve decided to do the hard work for you, and spend your newly acquired cash!
You’ve got $1,000 and a rare Florida winter storm coming. Let’s get you set up for warmth and coziness.
(By the way, I don’t make any commission on these links because I’m not a grifter trying to extract all of your $$$. Buy these or don’t, from wherever you choose...just make sure you listen to use while you do it!)
Here’s how I’d prioritize that budget:
Essentials First (around $400):
- Reliable Space Heater: A ceramic tower heater with safety features is a good bet. ($100 - $150) Since power outages can happen in storms, consider a propane heater for backup, but ONLY use it outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area. ($100 - $150)
- Warm Bedding: A thick comforter or duvet, flannel sheets, and a fleece blanket are essential for staying warm in bed. ($100 - $150)
Clothing for Layering (around $300):
- Base Layers: Thermal underwear tops and bottoms will make a huge difference. Merino wool or synthetic fabrics are best. ($50 - $100)
- Fleece Jacket or Hoodie: A good mid-layer for trapping heat. ($50 - $75)
- Warm Socks: Wool socks are ideal. Get several pairs! ($25 - $50)
- Waterproof Outer Layer: You might not have a heavy winter coat, so a waterproof jacket or even a poncho will help keep you dry if you need to go outside. ($50 - $75)
- Hat, Gloves, Scarf: Don’t forget the extremities! ($25 - $50)
Cozy Extras and Emergency Prep (around $300):
- Emergency Supplies: A flashlight, extra batteries, candles, and matches are important in case of power outages. A first-aid kit is also a good idea. ($50 - $100)
- Food and Drinks: Stock up on non-perishable food items and bottled water in case you can’t get to the store. Hot chocolate and tea are great for warming up. ($100 - $150)
- Cozy Up: A soft throw blanket for the couch, some good books or movies, and maybe a new board game to enjoy while you’re stuck inside. ($50 - $100)
Important Notes:
- Safety First: Never leave space heaters unattended, and make sure you have working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Check on Neighbors: If you have elderly neighbors or those with young children, check on them to make sure they’re staying warm and safe.
